CELEBRATION OF THE CREST – 2008
On Saturday, December 6, 2008, the Parents Club will host the annual Brother Martin Celebration of the Crest - Extravaganza.  It will be held at the New Orleans Hilton Riverside Hotel.  The night will begin with a Patron Party from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Jefferson Ballroom, where you will be treated to a variety of food and drinks while enjoying the sounds of our very own Brother Martin Jazz Band.  The main event will be from 7:30 p.m. – Midnight in the Grand Ballroom, offering superb dining and open bars throughout the evening.  While enjoying the festivities, you can let loose on the dance floor to the music of the band Orleans.  There will be14 silent auction boards featuring hundreds of great items and a “lively” display of verbal auction items and exciting bidding.  The night will also include the much anticipated Dream Vacation, Sader Star, and Pass a Good Time raffles.  Tickets are $150 per person for the Patron Party and main event and $75 per person for the main event only.  Tables of 10 are also available.

STATE SWIM MEET
Congratulations to the Crusader swim team as they competed in the State swim meet.  Francis Aguillard advanced to the finals heat in both the 200 free and 500 free earning 6th and 7th place respectively with personal best times. Kevin Forschler advanced to the consolation heat and won them both (also personal best) in the 100 fly and 500 free earning him two 9th place finishes. Adam Beyer advanced to the consolation heat in the 200 IM and 100 breast earning 15th and 16th place with personal best times as well. He has been a great addition to the Brother Martin team as a freshman and has 3 exciting years ahead.  The 400 freestyle relay tied in the morning with St. Paul’s for a spot in the finals heat.  The relay members (Francis, Addison, Adam and Kevin) dropped 9 seconds from their entry time and beat St. Paul’s to give them an overall 7th place finish.  The team scored 10th place in the state with 26 men's Division 1 (5A) schools represented at the meet.

LHSAA HALL OF FAME
Coach Jack Schommer has been selected for induction into the LHSAA Hall of Fame.Jack coached football, track, and cross country at St. Aloysius.  On Elysian Fields, he coached track and cross country and was Athletic Director from 1971-1992.
     He earned the title as “Father of Cross Country in Louisiana” because of his tireless efforts to promote and advance the sport.   In 1969, the former Times Picayune Coach of the Year (1968) was the driving force in pushing legislation to have cross country sanctioned as a state championship sport, which took place the following year.

     His career began at St. Aloysius where he served as an assistant football, basketball and baseball coach (1957-1969). While there he formed the first cross country team in Louisiana (1964) and in 1966 he formed the first cross country meet.
      His greatest coaching accomplishments came at Brother Martin where he coached from 1969 until 1990. During that time his teams won 19 City Cross Country Championships (16 consecutive), 12 consecutive District Cross Country Championships, three state titles and three runners-up finishes.
     In 2003 he was awarded the Louisiana Track & Field Coaches Association Lifetime Achievement Award.
     The induction ceremony-banquet is set for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Crowne Plaza, in Baton Rouge. The ceremony will be held in conjunction with the LHSAA's annual convention.

Pieri Signs with Gold Rush
Senior distance runner, Matt Pieri signed a cross country scholarship Wednesday with Xavier University of New Orleans.  Matt Pieri finished fourth in the 2007 Class 5A state meet and ninth in the 2008 meet.  He helped Brother Martin win the 5A state championship in 2007 and finish third this year.
"He will be one of our team's top three runners his freshman year," Xavier coach Joseph Moses said. "He will be a difference-maker at some point, depending on how quickly he adjusts from high school to college competition."
As a junior in outdoor track this past spring,

Pieri finished third in the 3,200-meter run (9:58.04) in the Region III-5A meet and fourth in the District 10-5A meet. He helped Brother Martin win team championships in both events.
 

MARITIME SUNDAY
The NJROTC Color Guard and Robert Wallace of the Crusader Band assisted in the annual Stella Maris Maritime Ministries Maritime Sunday blessing at St. Louis Cathedral. The memorial mass was presided by Archbishop Alfred Hughes which included blessings of the waters, seafarers, vessels and port workers.

Catholic School students in the 7th and 8th grade who wish to apply to a Catholic High School should download the attached “Archdiocesan Application Form”, complete it, and return the completed form to your current school office by Wednesday, November 19

Students in the private or public school system should download the attached “Archdiocesan Application Form”, complete it, and return the completed form along with four years of transcripts (ie. grades and standardized test scores) as well as your most current grades, to your selected high school by Friday, November 21

OPEN HOUSE
On Thursday evening, we opened our doors to over 700 prospective students and their families for our annual Open House.  Student led tours highlighted academic departments, extracurricular activities and athletic teams.  The Meyer Science and Mathematics Building as well as the Ridgley Fine Arts and Athletic Center were featured. A 3D tour of the new Chapel was presented in the World Language Lab.

CRAZY EIGHTS!
This past Friday night, over 400 Mt. Carmel eighth grade Cubs and Brother Martin eighth grade Crusaders gathered at Brother Martin for the annual “Crazy Eights”—a night of fun, friendly competition, and fellowship. Sponsored by the Student Council at both schools, the evening features ice breakers, twenty crazy competitions, line dance lessons, and pizza and brownies.

D.J. AUGUSTIN COMES HOME
Let’s welcome D.J. home for his 1st professional game in New Orleans.  D.J. Augustin ‘06 and the Charlotte Bobcats will take on CP3 and the Hornets, at the New Orleans Arena, on Wednesday, December 10th.  Ticket holders will receive a FREE Hornets hat at the game with each ticket purchased!  A special Conlin Crazies T-Shirt will be on sale at the Bookstore.  Tickets go on sale at the Brother Martin Bookstore.

CALENDAR CHANGE
Due to school cancellations because of the recent hurricanes, we are adding one additional instructional day in the spring semester.  Monday, March 2, 2009 will be a full instructional day instead of the originally planned student holiday.  Please note that this is the Monday immediately following the week-long Mardi Gras holidays.
