"Location! Easy access to the French Quarter and the Central Business District

with a feeling of living in a suburban garden."

"Lots of different house types to choose from."

"A safe, quiet neighborhood with beautiful old homes."

"Uptown's where it's at!"

Description
The grand mansions along St. Charles Avenue that drowse beneath their stately trees. The energetic bustle of Magazine Street. The spires of Tulane and Loyola Universities.  The cool shade of Audubon Park. The raised Creole cottages and restrained Greek Revival houses and gabled Tudors and Carpenter's Gothic fantasies that line streets named Jefferson and Napoleon and Austerlitz and Audubon. And
did we mention the Zoo? And the golf course? Uptown New Orleans is the epitome of the gracious, gentle beauty that's defined New Orleans
for many generations. And that beauty is still here, a little wind.

The long sweep of Uptown New Orleans is in fact a number of neighborhoods.  From its downriver border with the Garden District, the area progresses into a vista of increasingly large homes along St. Charles Avenue, while the side-streets offer an array of housing options from bungalows to apartment buildings to modest single- and double-shotguns. Audubon Park provides a tranquil oasis, where one of the top-rated public golf courses in the country shares green space with ponds, bridle-paths and Beaux Arts fountains. As you approach the levee and the bend of the river, the bustle of university life makes itself felt in small cafes and thriving restaurants. And when you reach the river itself the broad slope of the levee provides a gentle haven for dog-walkers, bicyclists, picnic parties and sunbathers.

Uptown New Orleans, with its older, raised homes and naturally occurring high
ground, was spared almost all of the recent flooding, and what hurricane damage occurred is being rapidly repaired. Today it's one of the most pristine sections
of the city, a place where angel's trumpet vines scent the air and children play on
the shady streets, a place combining the peaceful pace and leisure of suburban
life with all the history, culture, events and opportunities a major city and
university center can offer.

History
Until the middle of the 19th century, Uptown New Orleans was simply an area of pastures and farmland. After 1860, a series of land speculations began, carving up the old plantations for residential land. By 1880, the district had encompassed the city of Jefferson and Jefferson Avenue was its western boundary. In the 1880s and 1809s growth continued, this time through a series of private streets, Rosa Park, Richmond Place, and finally Audubon Place in 1898. The Worlds Fair of 1884, called the Cotton Centennial, brought tourists from around the world to the lush grounds of what later became Audubon Park and the Zoo, and when Tulane University moved to its current location in the 1890s, the Uptown area gained even more prestige. Through the early years of the 20th century, the area gradually became more densely populated, while still maintaining its graceful charm. Today, the Uptown area is the core of residential New Orleans and one of the largest integrated neighborhoods in the United States.
